Smoke Alarm Compliance in Brisbane: What Homeowners Need Before 1 January 2027

If you own a home in Brisbane, the smoke alarm rules are no longer a “later problem”. Queensland requires interconnected photoelectric smoke alarms in every bedroom, in hallways that connect bedrooms, and on every level of the home by 1 January 2027.

Interconnected means if one alarm goes off, they all go off — which is exactly what you want at 2am.

This autumn is a smart time to get on top of it because it’s easier to book work before the end‑of‑year rush, and you’ll head into winter knowing your family’s early warning system is sorted.

What “compliant” looks like (plain English)

A compliant setup generally means your alarms are: photoelectric (not ionisation), interconnected throughout the dwelling, installed in the required locations (bedrooms, hallways, and each storey), and marked as complying with Australian Standard AS 3786‑2014.

Battery or hardwired — what’s best?

For existing homes, you can comply with hardwired 240V alarms (installed by a licensed electrician) or 10‑year non‑removable battery alarms.

If your place already has hardwired 240V smoke alarms, any replacements must be hardwired 240V photoelectric alarms — you can’t “downgrade” to battery.

Quick homeowner check you can do today

  • Count them: do you have one in every bedroom, hallway, and each level?

  • Check age: if any alarm is over 10 years old or fails testing, plan to replace it.

  • Test and clean: press “test” and clean according to instructions (often vacuuming).

When to call an electrician

If you need hardwired smoke alarms installed or replaced, or you want an expert to confirm placement and interconnection (wired or wireless), call a licensed electrician.

For fixed wiring work, unlicensed DIY electrical work is illegal in Queensland and creates serious risk.
